The use of flooring products including granite and wood1

There are a multitude of exciting options to research when building a house including the overall ambiance of your home. Planning beforehand the types of walls, floors, light fittings and general fixtures you want will result in obtaining your dream home. After deciding on the basic essentials, including whether you will have wooden flooring, tiles, granite or parkay, you can move forward with sourcing what you need. It is certainly worth planning beforehand as it will make it easier to have an idea of what you want when you start looking for the products you need. For example, if you know that you will want wooden flooring in the lounge and bedroom all you will then need to ascertain is whether you require conventional hardwood or bamboo flooring. Remember to take into consideration factors including comfort, practicality, security and safety.

Which products are best for your needs, wood, granite or carpet tiles?

You may want all the rooms when building a house to have wooden flooring excepting the kitchen and bathroom where you may prefer granite or linoleum. Wooden flooring has a ‘warmer’ feeling underfoot whereas granite is colder. Different rooms can benefit from a variety of flooring combinations to complement your wall and ceiling styles. The idea of sustainable development will appeal to some people which would make bamboo flooring a viable option to conventional hardwood and it is eco-friendly.

Deciding between bamboo or granite…

Granite is cool under your feet.

Bamboo is an eco-friendly grass which is as dense and viable as conventional wooden flooring.

Combinations of bamboo and granite can make an interesting setting depending on your aesthetic requirements.

Bamboo flooring looks and feels like conventional hardwood.

Bamboo is also suitable as an outdoor deck when building a house.

Instead of granite which feels cold underfoot consider the use of bamboo throughout to create a luxurious feeling of wooden pleasure.

Research is necessary before choosing a floor product such as marble if you are looking for a more eco-friendly product. This way you can ascertain which components are better avoided and choose something more appropriate. Bamboo flooring is another eco-friendly alternative to conventional hardwood flooring or marble. Various brands of grout do contain volatile organic compounds. These VOC’s can, not only, be possibly carcinogenic they can also expel chemicals into the atmosphere which are harmful resulting in air quality reduction which potentially can lead to health risk. To ascertain the grout VOC levels you should read the labels and the safety data specs. Look out for chemicals such as hydrocarbons, acetone and glycol ethers. If there appears to be no itemization on the products container, ask at a hardware store or enquire at a reputable building contracting firm. Do take into consideration when choosing a polymer-free grout that polymers do aid with the prevention of mold growth between tiles. Grouts with polymers also can release particles into the air that are harmful.

Hardwood or marble for sustainability?

There are so many different types of flooring to take into consideration for your home. You need to consider how your choice of flooring, be it hardwood flooring or marble, may play a factor in the resale value of you home should you decide to sell it in the future. Flooring can also play a major role in the ambiance of a home. Consider at the onset whether you plan on taking into consideration whether you will build with eco-friendly products which play a role in a sustainable future. Bamboo flooring is an attractive flooring which is beautiful to look at and feels very much like conventional hardwood flooring. It is also eco-friendly and supports sustainable development as it has an exceptionally fast growth rate compared to other timber. Bamboo reaches maturity in just over six years compared to 60 years for hardwood forests.

Some popular flooring products including marble and wood

Hardwood flooring remains a popular choices and has been around for centuries due to their timeless and natural beauty. Hardwood flooring include Pecan, Beech, Cherry, Oak, Pine, Birch, Maple, Oak and more.

Bamboo flooring is an eco-friendly grass that is versatile and attractive. Although it is a grass it is exceptionally hard comparing extremely well with other hardwood flooring products.

Laminate Flooring is frequently made of melamine resin which is a mixture made with formaldehyde. With some concerns about the air quality due to releases of VOC’s there are some laminated flooring that utilizes a a chemical process that reduces and neutralizes the emissions.

Marble floor tiles come in many different sizes and are processed from metamorphic rock blocks mainly calcium carbonate based and come in a variety of colors.

Ceramic tiles are the most waterproofed flooring product with a high gloss finish.

Carpets are another popular choice of flooring with the main downside being their somewhat bulky installation. They also now come in tiles.

Before starting make a solution of TSP (Trisodium Phosphate – a cleaner) and clean the ceramic tiles with a scrubbing brush.

Rinse using a mop and allow complete drying.

Bamboo is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional hardwood.

There are different options to installing bamboo flooring, one being a glue-down method.

The glue-down method is beneficial when laying bamboo over ceramic tiles as it can’t be nailed to the tiles.

Before laying the bamboo flooring the ceramic surface must be solid and clean for the glue to hold fast.

Ensure that the moisture levels are up and the tiles are all well attached with no loose, high lipped edges.

Emboss the grout joints before gluing the bamboo flooring to the tiles.

Gluing the Bamboo to the tiles

After cleaning the tiles and allowed for total drying you can begin installing your eco-friendly bamboo product……

Distribute the adhesive along the edge of the tiles by using a tool called a notched trowel.

It is best to start away from entrances.

The adhesive must be applied along the length of the wall, extending approximately two feet away from the wall.

Place the first layering of bamboo flooring against the wall, linked together with their tongue-and-groove ends.

The bamboo hardwood grooved sides must face the wall.

Leave spaces between the wall and the boards using a spacer to allow floor expansions with any climate changes.

Using a saw (miter) saw the last board of that row to fit on the end as required.

…complete the installation process over the tiles by:

By connecting the bamboo flooring boards along their edges (remembering the tongue-in-groove fittings) you now set the 2nd row alongside the 1st row ensuring they fit tightly to each other.

Use a small piece of spare flooring and with will a mallet insert the piece against the edge of the outer board without damaging the tiles underneath.

To avoid the boards from lining up row by row, stagger the ends.

Continue in this fashion row by row applying more adhesive as required to the tiles below.

Once you beginning running out of space to work allow the adhesive to set for 12 hours so that you can stand on the bamboo flooring.

Using a table-saw cut your final hardwood boards leaving a 3/8-inch gap at the wall for the trimming.

Your eco-friendly bamboo flooring is now installed.

Flooring made from bamboo is an attractive alternative to conventional hardwood products as it is eco-friendly therefore supporting environmental sustainability. Bamboo is a true grass and forms part of of a family of plants called Poaceae, the subfamily bamboo belongs to is called Mambusoideae. When bamboo is harvested there is no need for replanting as the root system is left intact. The root system itself holds the soil in place which helps in the prevention of soil erosion. Bamboo reaches maturity in just under six years and has very few pests and requires very little irrigation. Bamboo flooring has similar physical attributes to that of conventional hardwood flooring products and is also strong and durable. Moboo strand woven bamboo has twice the indentations resistance of oak and can be used for homes and businesses. Bamboo is great great choice for keeping the carbon footprint low.

Reasons to use bamboo for your flooring needs include…

Bamboo has similar physical characteristics to other hardwood products.

Bamboo is an eco-friendly, renewable product.

Bamboo supports environmental sustainability, keeping the carbon footprint low.

Bamboo is non-pollutant, termite and allergy resistant.

A little more about bamboo flooring

Moboo flooring can be used for homes and businesses. High quality coatings of Klumpp and Treffert are used and layered up to nine times to ensure a scratch resistant surface with a low gloss, easy to clean hygienic surface. Bamboo can be harvested without the need to replant because the root system is left intact . Bamboo is a natural eco-friendly product and colour variations are to be expected. A great deal of research has been invested into the manufacture of quality bamboo for flooring as a hardwood alternative. The appearance and feel of bamboo flooring is similar to that of conventional hardwood making it a suitable choice for environmental sustainability. Always ensure that you check that the supplier and the products carry the certification required such as ISO, CE and FSE certification. However, if the product is of a good quality and suitably graded and sorted colour variation will be avoided. Ensure that more than a small sample is presented to you. When bamboo is cut down too soon it the flooring result will be streaky in appearance and not as hard or durable as fully matured bamboo.
