Is all underlay the same?
As with bamboo floors, there are so many underlays to choose from. So how do you know which one to choose when investing in a new floating floor? Well here is some information that may well help you when looking at the vast array of products available.
Firstly the underlay is key to the feel of your floor, as a floating floor is laid on top of the underlay. Therefore the underlay needs to be stable and durable for the life of your floor. And with a quality bamboo floor that could well be the life of your home.
Some underlays are made of extruded foam, which is basically air bubbles encased in foam. A cheap product will collapse over time under the weight of the floor and daily traffic. And how much use will a layer of plastic be under your quality floor?
Rubber underlays are generally far denser, and have the edge over foam products as they have superior sound dampening and thermal insulation properties. And they will not collapse over time.
Then there are the self-adhesive underlays. These are excellent products; however they can be quite pricey. This product is ideal for tongue and groove planks, where glue is generally used. However with the click system a standard underlay will do perfectly.
Cork underlay is an eco-friendly option. A breathable layer that does not absorb moisture. Good sound dampening properties. Can be pricey, depending on thickness and quality.
Look for a product that has a built in moisture barrier, this will save costs in materials. And will save time for the installer, which in the end will save you money.
The thickness of the underlay also plays a factor, the thicker the product the sounder the dampening qualities. A 2/3mm rubber underlay will do the trick in most applications. The thicker the product the more it is going to set you back.
Choose a product that is made from recycled materials, mould and mildew resistant; and healthy for your home.
So to some up; look for a product that suites your application, and pocket. However the cheaper the products will not last as long the denser products. Ask your supplier for their recommendations. Don’t cut corners on the underlay; it’s as important as the floor and installer you choose. A couple extra Rands per square meter will make all the difference to the feel and durability of your floor.
So ensure that the underlay is of equal quality to the floor you choose.
